The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has called on Nigerians to hold their political leaders accountable for their performance, particularly in addressing the country's pressing issues of insecurity, poverty, and economic hardship. This appeal was made by ACF chairman Mamman Osuman in a message marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary. Osuman emphasized that the country's challenges require greater accountability from those in public office.

Osuman expressed deep concern over the pervasive insecurity and its devastating impact on communities, including the displacement of citizens, disruption of economic activities, closure of schools, and destruction of livelihoods. He stressed that leadership is a sacred trust, and those entrusted with public authority must continually remember that they hold such positions in trust for the people and for the common good.

The ACF chairman lamented that some of the difficulties confronting Nigerians have been perpetrated or aggravated by people entrusted with leadership. He insisted that public office should serve the common good rather than personal interests. Osuman's remarks underscore the need for a shift in the way leaders are held accountable and the importance of prioritizing the welfare of citizens.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Osuman urged eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate actively in the electoral process. He advised voters to thoroughly examine candidates' records, policies, and positions on issues affecting the country, rather than making choices solely based on the instructions of political parties.

Osuman emphasized the importance of informed decision-making, stating that votes should be based on individual analysis, conscience, judgment, and assessment of the candidates and the issues. He warned against election-related violence, urging political actors and citizens, particularly young people, to exercise restraint before, during, and after the polls.

The ACF chairman called on Nigerians to reject inflammatory rhetoric, provocation, and destruction of lives and property. He stressed that differences in political opinion should not become grounds for hatred or violence. Osuman's appeal highlights the need for a peaceful and responsible electoral process.

Osuman concluded by emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in securing Nigeria's future. He urged citizens and government to renew their commitment to peace, unity, justice, responsible citizenship, good governance, and the dignity of every Nigerian. By doing so, Nigerians can work together to build a more stable and prosperous future.
