The Accra-Tema Motorway project in Ghana has achieved 53% completion, according to A.T Expressway Limited, the project company. The 19.5-kilometre road project, which commenced in August 2024, is slightly behind schedule. Ing. Kwabena Bempong, Chief Resident Engineer, cited difficulties in relocating utility infrastructure as a major cause of the delays. The project aims to ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility along one of Ghana's busiest transport corridors.
Ing. Bempong attributed the delays to challenges in relocating pipelines and fibre-optic cables. Despite this, the project company is taking steps to accelerate work and meet the revised August 2027 deadline. Construction equipment and resources have been mobilised to ensure a consistent supply of asphalt concrete for the road surfacing stage. The project's progress was announced at the launch of A.T Expressway Limited's website on October 28, 2026.
The Accra-Tema Motorway project involves the construction of a 2-lane, access-controlled expressway and an urban highway with 3 lanes in each direction. Certain sections will be expanded to 5 lanes in each direction to improve merging and traffic movement. The project also includes improvements to the Tetteh Quarshie, Community 18, and Lashibi interchanges, as well as the construction of pedestrian crossing facilities.
The planned improvements aim to enhance movement between communities on both sides of the motorway, reducing unsafe pedestrian crossings and turning movements. Ing. Bempong stated that the project includes 20 box culverts and 3 bridges, all at different stages of construction. The project's design and construction are being undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority.
A.T Expressway Limited is the concessionaire, while Maripoma Enterprise Limited serves as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor. The US$339 million project is expected to strengthen trade connectivity and improve urban mobility. The project's completion is anticipated to have a positive impact on the region's transportation infrastructure.
The Accra-Tema Motorway project is a significant infrastructure development in Ghana, with a focus on enhancing road safety and reducing traffic congestion. The project's progress is being closely monitored, with stakeholders working together to ensure its timely completion.
