The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has revealed plans to construct a residential housing complex for residents of Kofikrom, a squatter settlement at Avenor in the North Industrial Area. The project aims to provide single-room accommodation to replace the predominantly wooden structures currently used as homes. This initiative follows a recent fire that destroyed several makeshift structures in the community.

According to Mayor Allotey, the housing project will be undertaken with support from corporate institutions. The proposed development will include permanent block structures, streetlights, walkways, improved sanitation facilities, and tarred access roads. The goal is to transform the settlement into a safer and more organised residential community.

The proposed housing complex will provide residents with free accommodation. Mayor Allotey stressed that the units will neither be rented out nor sold to beneficiaries, as the land on which the settlement sits remains government property. This move is part of efforts to address the living conditions and safety challenges confronting residents of the settlement.

The recent fire at Kofikrom destroyed several makeshift structures and affected adjoining industrial facilities, including parts of Duraplast. The incident highlighted the need to address the community's challenges. Mayor Allotey, drawing on his personal experiences growing up on the streets, expressed his understanding of the difficulties faced by people living in deprived communities.

Mayor Allotey's background has shaped his approach to addressing the challenges confronting people living in vulnerable conditions. He stated, “Street no dey forget street,” underscoring his personal connection to the challenges faced by residents. The proposed housing development seeks to provide residents with more secure and dignified accommodation while improving the broader environment.

The project aims to replace the current makeshift settlement with permanent structures and basic infrastructure, including improved roads, lighting, and sanitation. Authorities are currently clearing debris from the affected area following the fire. The proposed housing complex is part of a longer-term response to the conditions that have made the community vulnerable to such incidents.

The housing project is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of residents in Kofikrom. With the support of corporate institutions, the project will provide a safer and more organised living environment. The Mayor's initiative has been well-received by residents, who are hopeful that their living conditions will improve significantly.
