The arrests of three high-ranking officials in Knysna, South Africa, have sparked calls for accountability and an end to corruption. Thando Matika, the former mayor of Knysna, Boy Ngubo, the acting municipal manager, and Busisiwe Lubelwana, the acting chief financial officer, were taken into custody on Thursday. They face charges of corruption related to a security services contract at the Knysna municipality in the Western Cape.

The arrests were made by a police task team for political murders after receiving information that a businessman who was awarded a security services contract allegedly demanded bribe money in exchange for continuing the contract. The businessman reportedly paid hundreds of thousands of rand to avoid having his contract terminated. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, national police spokesperson, confirmed that the three suspects will appear in court on Monday.

Levael Davis, the Democratic Alliance's (DA) mayoral candidate for Knysna, welcomed the arrests and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and accountability. Davis stated that the party has consistently pushed for a proper investigation and accountability to stop corruption and maladministration. He noted that the arrests demonstrate that the DA's fight against corruption within the council has been in the best interests of the people of Knysna.

Davis highlighted that the arrests are significant because they involve the misuse of public funds. He stressed that accountability should not stop with the arrests and that if investigations reveal that municipal funds were unlawfully lost, all available mechanisms should be used to recover the money. The DA has been pushing for the implementation of Article 139, which would allow for the intervention of the provincial government in the municipality.

The Western Cape government had proposed implementing Article 139, but it was rejected. Davis argued that the evidence now confirms that the rejection was justified. He also noted that residents of Knysna have suffered due to coalition chaos, instability, and a decline in basic services, and that the recovered funds could have been used to improve infrastructure, create jobs, and address the river mouth crisis.

The DA has urged that the criminal and special investigations into the security tender be completed, and that all individuals be held accountable according to the same standards, regardless of their political affiliations or positions. The party has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and accountability to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The arrests and charges against the three officials have raised concerns about the extent of corruption in the Knysna municipality. The DA has called for calm and emphasized that the rule of law should be allowed to take its course. The case is set to continue in court on Monday, and it remains to be seen what the outcome will be.
