Nigerian football club Abia Warriors has appealed against the five-match suspension imposed on their multimedia officer, Chidera Favour Igwe. The Umuahia-based club described the punishment as excessive and unjustified. According to Abia Warriors, Igwe did not attempt to disrupt a live broadcast during their Matchday 10 fixture on October 25. Instead, the club claimed that Igwe expressed displeasure over what she considered poor officiating.

Abia Warriors denied that Igwe attempted to disrupt the live broadcast, stating that she merely asked a broadcast cameraman to focus on the visiting team’s section. The club alleged that the cameraman had kept his camera on Igwe for an extended period. Abia Warriors maintained that Igwe did not obstruct the cameraman from performing his duties. The club urged the Nigeria Premier Football League to reconsider the sanction imposed on Igwe.

In addition to the suspension of Igwe, Abia Warriors also challenged a separate allegation of inadequate security during the fixture. The club received a notice over an alleged breach of Rule 8.13.52 of the 2026/2027 EUROMATCH NPFL Framework and Rules. Abia Warriors insisted that adequate security arrangements were in place during the match.

The club argued that broadcast footage could help establish what transpired during the fixture. Abia Warriors added that the visiting team left the stadium without molestation or any reported security incident. The club urged the league to obtain the visitors’ account before reaching a decision on the security notice.

Abia Warriors called for the withdrawal of the security notice, reaffirming its commitment to complying with league regulations. The club emphasized its commitment to maintaining professional relationships with match officials, broadcast partners, and other stakeholders. Abia Warriors expressed hope that the league would reconsider the sanction imposed on Igwe.

If the league determines that disciplinary action is warranted, Abia Warriors asked for Igwe’s suspension to be reconsidered. The club is awaiting the league’s response to its submissions. The league’s decision will determine the fate of Igwe and the club.

The appeal by Abia Warriors highlights the complexities of maintaining discipline and security in Nigerian football. The outcome of the appeal will be closely watched by stakeholders in the Nigerian football league.
