The Abia State Government has commenced the construction of a 15MVA injection substation at Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, aimed at enhancing electricity supply in the capital town. This development was announced by Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House. The project is a collaborative effort with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company. Upon completion, the substation is expected to significantly improve power supply and positively impact the lives of Umuahia residents.
In addition to the Umuahia substation project, the Abia State Government is also undertaking power restoration projects in various areas. These include Ohafia, Abam in Arochukwu LGA, as well as Ezere and Acha in Isuikwuato LGA. According to Mr. Kanu, the Abam project has progressed to its second phase, covering four communities, while the Ohafia project is nearing completion, with about 100 percent of the work done. These initiatives aim to restore and improve electricity supply to the affected communities.
Further updates on power restoration projects indicate that work will soon commence in Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North LGA and parts of Ukwa East LGA, with a planned completion timeline of a fortnight. Moreover, the state government is actively involved in renewable energy deployment to Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state. A new standard has been established, requiring all functional PHCs to be equipped with renewable energy solutions. This move is part of the government's efforts to ensure reliable and sustainable power supply to healthcare facilities.
However, the Abia State Government has expressed concern over the vandalism of power assets and other government projects. Such acts not only disrupt electricity supply but also increase the financial burden on the government. Commissioner Kanu has urged traditional rulers, town union leaders, and security agencies to develop strategies to curb vandalism. He also encouraged communities to take ownership of government projects, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in protecting and maintaining public infrastructure.
In a related development, the Abia State Government is implementing water projects across the state under its Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme. Five water schemes, including pipeline reticulation, are currently undergoing rehabilitation across the three senatorial districts. The government has also selected eight additional water schemes for rehabilitation, in collaboration with Denmark’s Impact Fund, through its Infrastructure Finance Facility. Approval has been secured for grant-financed technical assistance to conduct feasibility studies on these schemes. These studies will support the development of inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable water infrastructure, further enhancing the state's water supply and sanitation systems.
