Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, has achieved a significant medical milestone by performing its first successful brain surgery on a 19-year-old male accident victim. The surgery was conducted on October 7, following a motorcycle accident on October 4 that left the patient with a large collection of blood within his skull. The patient underwent a four-hour emergency surgery to remove the blood and control further bleeding.

According to Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the successful procedure demonstrates the government's investment in specialised healthcare delivery under the Alex Otti administration. The patient was transferred to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, where he was making satisfactory post-operative recovery. Kanu stated that this medical milestone follows sustained efforts by the Abia State Government over the past two years to reposition the health sector.

Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, provided further details on the successful brain surgery, stating that the patient was brought to the hospital in deep coma with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of six out of 15, which later dropped to five. The patient's condition was critical due to massive bleeding into the brain compressing the brainstem, making immediate surgery necessary. Doctors had to act with precision as any attempt to refer the patient to another facility could have resulted in his death.

Professor Uche disclosed that more than 100 millilitres of blood clot was evacuated from the patient's brain, and the young man had subsequently started moving his limbs while receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit. The surgery was performed by a multidisciplinary team comprising Professor Uche, a neurosurgeon, and the hospital's neurosurgeon, Dr Kalu, and his team. This achievement demonstrates that complex neurosurgical procedures can now be successfully handled in Abia.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Chimezie Okwuonu, informed that the hospital will now consolidate on the achievement by investing further in neurosurgical services and creating a niche for complex brain and spine surgeries. Okwuonu said the breakthrough demonstrates that residents can access specialised brain and spine care without having to travel outside the state. The hospital's mandate is to provide specialist services as a support to primary health centres and general hospitals.

Dr Okwuonu disclosed that before now, the health facility had only one specialist consultant, the cardiologist, but presently, the place has 28 consultants, ensuring improved healthcare services. He described these as major milestones towards ending medical tourism in the state. The development has opened a new chapter in specialist healthcare delivery in Abia, particularly for patients suffering from neurological and neurosurgical conditions.

The successful brain surgery has strengthened the hospital's resolve to pursue more complex medical procedures and further expand specialist services. Okwuonu added that the development should give residents confidence that sophisticated medical care can increasingly be accessed within Abia, rather than sought outside the state. This achievement is a significant step towards providing holistic care for brain diseases in Abia State.
