Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science at Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo State, has died in a hotel room. According to reports, Uwuigbe had an encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker before his death on Monday, October 5, 2026. The incident occurred at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the State.

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and arrested three people in connection with Uwuigbe's death. Spokesperson Eno Ikoedem stated that the hotel owner, manager, and the woman involved in the incident, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, had been detained for questioning. The police received a report at about 8 pm on Monday that Uwuigbe had lodged in the hotel and engaged Jacob's services.

According to Ikoedem, Uwuigbe asked Jacob to purchase water for him, but when she returned to the room, she found the lecturer's lifeless body. The police spokesperson added that the investigation has commenced, and the arrests were part of efforts to establish what transpired before his death. Uwuigbe's remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation.

The university management has distanced itself from the incident, stressing that Uwuigbe's death occurred outside the university environment. AAU spokesperson Otunba Aladenika confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the university but emphasized that the incident was unrelated to the institution's official activities. Aladenika described the matter as the lecturer's private affair.
