A 12-day training session for 550 teachers in Niger's accelerated education program began on October 29, 2026, at the Zinder Normal Institute. The training, funded by the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank through the Niger LIRE Project, aims to enhance the skills of teachers working with out-of-school and early dropout children. The program targets 550 teachers, including 417 new animators and 133 teachers who participated in the program last year.
The training is part of the Niger LIRE Project's component 2, focused on improving learning outcomes for all children and addressing learning difficulties. Specifically, it falls under sub-component 2.2, which promotes second-chance programs for out-of-school and early dropout children. The Accelerated Education Device (DEAH) provides a new learning opportunity for children aged 9-16 who have never attended school or dropped out early.
The DEAH program has expanded its target age range from 9-12 years to 9-16 years, allowing more children to access educational opportunities tailored to their skills and insertion prospects. Upon completing their training, beneficiaries will be oriented according to their learning level, acquired skills, and age. Children with the necessary aptitudes can reintegrate into the regular education system, while older children may be directed to vocational training structures.
To ensure the smooth implementation of the training session, 24 trainers have been mobilized, with approximately two trainers per room. They are from the Federation and primary education sectors, providing pedagogical guidance to participants during the 12-day training. The Niger LIRE Project, funded by the IDA, supports the Niger State's efforts to improve learning quality, expand access to education, and provide second chances for children who have dropped out of school.
The deployment of 417 new centers, in addition to existing structures, is expected to strengthen alternative educational offerings in the Zinder region and promote school or professional integration for concerned children. The training session is taking place at the Zinder Normal Institute, with participants including 417 new animators recruited to operate 417 centers and 133 teachers who previously participated in the program.
The Accelerated Education Device (DEAH) is an approach that offers a second chance at learning for children aged 9-16 who have never attended school or dropped out early. This initiative aligns with the Niger State's efforts to improve education and provide opportunities for out-of-school children. The program's expansion to include older children aims to address the educational needs of a broader age range.
The Niger LIRE Project's support for the DEAH program demonstrates its commitment to improving education in Niger. By providing training for teachers and expanding educational opportunities, the project aims to enhance learning outcomes and promote social inclusion for disadvantaged children.
