The Borno State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of five suspects in Maiduguri. Contrary to viral reports, the suspects were not arrested for wearing "Tinubu Must Go" T-shirts, but for possession of drugs and two T-shirts with the inscription. According to the police public relations officer, Kenneth Nahum Daso, the suspects were apprehended on September 25, 2026, during a routine township patrol.

The five suspects were found in possession of 15 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, one shisha pot, one pair of scissors, and two T-shirts bearing the inscription "Tinubu Must Go". The police said the suspects were arrested over allegations of inciting disturbance, breach of public peace, thuggery, and being in possession of a drug substance. The suspects were subsequently subjected to preliminary investigation, during which statements were obtained from them.

The Borno State Police Command has denied allegations of partisanship, stating that the Nigeria Police Force is a professional, non-partisan institution that does not discriminate against persons on the basis of political affiliation or viewpoint. The Command emphasized its commitment to the protection of fundamental human rights, the rule of law, due process, accountability, and transparency in the discharge of its responsibilities.

The police said the decision to charge the matter before a competent court is intended to allow the appropriate judicial process to take its course. Members of the public are urged to rely on verified information and allow the court to determine the matter based on the facts and evidence presented before it. The Command remains committed to professionalism, impartiality, accountability, and the protection of lives and property.

The incident has sparked widespread public discourse, with many Nigerians expressing concerns about the arrest and prosecution of the suspects. However, the police have maintained that the arrest was based on the suspects' possession of drugs and not for their alleged support for a particular political viewpoint. The police have also urged the public to be cautious of misinformation and to rely on verified sources.

The Borno State Police Command has assured the public that it will continue to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations. The Command has also reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in its operations. The suspects are currently facing trial in a Maiduguri court.
