The Model International United Nations in Guinea (GUIMUN 2026) recently concluded its three-day conference, bringing together 244 young delegates to discuss and negotiate on pressing international issues. The event focused on regulating new information technologies and artificial intelligence, with participants assuming the roles of diplomats to strengthen their capacities in diplomacy, leadership, and global citizenship.
During the conference, participants engaged in intense debates, defended their positions, and negotiated resolutions on various international issues. Mamadou Yero Bhoye Sylla, President of the General Assembly, emphasized the importance of dialogue and responsibility in building peace. He highlighted the dual nature of artificial intelligence and new technologies, which present both opportunities for progress and challenges to international security.
Sylla stressed that the real challenge lies not in developing new technologies, but in ensuring they serve humanity and global security. Zalika Ali, representative of Plan International Guinea, praised the young delegates' engagement and the quality of discussions. She described GUIMUN as a leadership school, promoting global citizenship and cooperation, and encouraged young people to take ownership of decisions shaping their future.
Hadja Kadiatou Diallo, coordinator of GUIMUN 2026, reported that over 500 young people were impacted through training and simulations this year. The conference built on previous events, including a simulation of UN subcommittees in May, which involved 250 young participants. Diallo expressed pride in the event's success and its impact on young people.
Thierno Hamidou Bah, chief of staff at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Handicrafts, attended the closing ceremony and encouraged participants to apply their new knowledge. He emphasized the importance of patience, rigor, perseverance, and respect in assuming responsibilities, advising that competence alone is not enough.
GUIMUN 2026 aimed to equip young people with a deeper understanding of international issues and to actively contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. The event demonstrated its commitment to training a better-prepared youth to address the complexities of the modern world.
The GUIMUN conference series continues to play a vital role in shaping the next generation of leaders and diplomats. By providing a platform for young people to engage in diplomatic simulations, GUIMUN fosters leadership, global citizenship, and cooperation, ultimately contributing to a more peaceful and secure world.
