Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has reiterated the federal parliament's commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible general elections in 2027. He made this statement during an interactive session with the Religious Network for Peace and Development in Abuja. The session was aimed at presenting the Organisation's programmes ahead of next year's polls. Tajudeen emphasized the crucial role of religious organisations in promoting peace and unity in the country.
Tajudeen noted that religious organisations remain formidable bodies that people respect and listen to. He therefore urged religious leaders to use their influence to promote a peaceful Nigeria before, during, and after the 2027 elections. The Speaker also stated that the House will always support causes that promote peace and unity, "as and when due." This move is expected to foster a peaceful and successful conduct of the polls.
The Religious Network for Peace and Development has appointed Speaker Tajudeen as its Grand Patron. The group called for his support for their campaign for peace and unity ahead of the elections. Accepting the appointment, Tajudeen expressed his elation and described the day as "important." He added that he was "humbled" by the Grand Patron appointment.
A former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, led the delegation that presented the appointment letter to the Speaker. Shekarau also presented a catalogue of past activities and a programme of activities towards the 2027 general elections. The ex-Governor noted that members of the association are drawn from various religious organisations and are working towards the growth and development of Nigeria.
Shekarau stressed that the body is committed to integrating its objectives across the country, mobilising communities, especially the youth and religious organisations. The former Governor emphasised that the group's ultimate concern is good governance. He stated that they are working towards promoting peaceful cooperation between and among all Nigerians.
Tajudeen assured the group that he will not be a passive member or patron. He stated that the House is a "solid partner" of the Religious Network for Peace and Development. The Speaker also mentioned that he will convey the group's activities to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with Hon. James Faleke, Secretary of the Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress.
The Religious Network for Peace and Development has been in existence for over three decades. The group is made up of members from various religious organisations. With the elections approaching, the group is committed to promoting peace and unity in the country.
