Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has stated that the 2027 presidential election will be determined by the Nigerian people, not by money or influence. He made this declaration at the APM North-Central Town Hall Meeting in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital. Makinde expressed gratitude to Governor Abdullahi Sule and the people of Nasarawa State for hosting his team.
Makinde emphasized that the 2027 election will not be influenced by pundits, pollsters, or the number of billionaires supporting a candidate. Instead, it will be a contest between Nigerians and the issues of hunger and bad governance. He cited his own experience as governor of Oyo State, where he worked to reduce the state's dependence on federal allocation from over 80 per cent in 2019 to 65 per cent by 2022.
The governor outlined his vision for a "reset" agenda, which will focus on four critical areas: security, education, economy, and the socio-political environment. He believes that this agenda can be achieved within four years and will create special programmes for vulnerable groups, including women in agriculture, market women, physically challenged women, and widows.
Makinde criticized the current economic approach at the federal level, describing it as "voodoo economics." He pointed out that despite increased funding from the Federation Account to states, insecurity remains a significant issue, particularly in the North-Central region. He questioned whether the increased funds have translated into tangible results in fighting hunger.
The governor also spoke about his plan for a transitional government of national unity, which will culminate in new players and a new agenda for Nigeria's sustainable development. He stated that as president from May 29, 2027, he will work to create a new security architecture, a new path for education, and a reset economy utilizing data, science, and logic.
National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, also addressed the event, stating that the party can no longer be taken for granted. He noted that Nigerians are joining the party in large numbers ahead of the 2027 general elections, and that the array of governorship hopefuls lined up with him is a sign of APM's rebirth and growing national acceptance.
Makinde's message to his supporters was one of inclusivity and economic empowerment. He emphasized that when the tide is high, all boats will rise, and that his administration will work to create opportunities for all Nigerians. The event was attended by various groups, including women in agriculture, market women, physically challenged women, and widows.
