The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the national voter register has risen to approximately 110 million, ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this information at a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders Meeting in Abuja. The meeting was held to provide an update on the national voters' register. Amupitan highlighted that Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna states have the highest number of registered voters.

According to Amupitan, Lagos leads the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 7,488,633 registered voters. Kano follows with 6,570,276 registered voters, while Kaduna has 4,662,640. These states have emerged as the top three states with the highest number of registered voters. The INEC chairman provided the statistics to give an update on the voter registration process.

Katsina occupies the fourth position with 3,876,051 registered voters, while Rivers State has 3,736,434. Oyo State follows with 3,588,111 voters, and Delta has 3,525,988. These states have a significant number of registered voters, according to the INEC data. The voter registration process is a crucial aspect of the electoral process.

Benue State has 3,057,225 registered voters, placing it eighth on the list, while Ogun State has 3,037,981. Bauchi completes the top 10 with 3,012,547 registered voters. The figures were announced as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections. The commission is expected to commence nationwide collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) on Friday, October 9.

The INEC Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise produced more than 10.6 million new applicants. The commission subsequently completed the public display of the preliminary voters' register for claims and objections, as well as the final Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) clean-up. This process aimed to ensure the accuracy of the voter register.

The commission has urged newly registered voters to collect their PVCs and ensure that their details are correctly captured ahead of the elections. INEC has continued to emphasise the importance of voter participation and public confidence in the electoral process. The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, while the governorship and State Assembly elections are slated for February 6.

The voter registration process is a critical component of the electoral process, and INEC is working to ensure that all eligible voters are registered. The commission's efforts aim to promote transparency and credibility in the electoral process. With the voter register now at 110 million, INEC is poised to conduct a successful election.
