The Oyo State Chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has commenced mobilisation for the 2027 general elections. According to the state chairman, Hon. Anthony Sunday Makinde, the party held a meeting with its leaders and members across the 33 local government areas of the state in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The meeting aimed to prepare members for the upcoming elections. Makinde stated that the party is open to negotiations with willing candidates.
The NNPP in Oyo State currently has no governorship or presidential candidate. Makinde clarified that although the party's principal, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is the vice-presidential candidate of the NDC, the party in Oyo State has not adopted any candidate. He mentioned that the NDC in Oyo State is not accommodating, and there are no discussions with them. The NNPP is exploring options for collaboration with other parties.
The party is in discussions with the All Progressives Congress (APC) for potential collaboration in the Oyo governorship race and presidential election. Makinde mentioned that Engr. Dotun Sanusi, the Okanlomo Oodua, is involved in the discussions. Sanusi is a respected leader and philanthropist who has facilitated dialogue between the NNPP and APC. However, Makinde stated that an agreement has not been sealed yet.
The NNPP is open to backing any presidential candidate, as Engr. Kwankwaso is not currently the presidential candidate of the NDC. Makinde mentioned that if Kwankwaso were the presidential candidate, the party's direction would be clear. The party is exploring options to ensure they work with the best candidate in Oyo State and Nigeria.
The discussions between the NNPP and APC are ongoing, with the involvement of Engr. Sanusi expected to facilitate a resolution. Makinde stated that an agreement between the parties is expected before October 17, 2026. The collaboration is not based on financial terms but on the development and progress of Oyo State and Nigeria.
The NNPP has begun mobilisation, with members displaying their voter cards at the meeting. Makinde emphasized that the party's focus is on getting the best candidate to work with in Oyo State. The party is open to negotiations with other parties, not just the APC.
The NNPP's mobilisation efforts are part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections. The party aims to ensure it has a strong presence in the state. Key discussions are ongoing with various stakeholders to solidify the party's position.
