The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has accused opposition parties of orchestrating staged video recordings of campaign poster destructions as a propaganda stunt to discredit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election. Keyamo shared a video on his official X account showing a man described as a sponsored thug tearing down APC posters while brandishing a weapon.
Keyamo asserted that the act was deliberately recorded to manufacture a false narrative of widespread public discontent against President Bola Tinubu. He stated that the interpretation and spin given to these incidents is that the President has been rejected by angry Nigerians. However, Keyamo noted that this is just one voter amongst 93,469,008 registered voters in Nigeria, implying that the incident is insignificant.
Keyamo also criticised sections of the media for what he described as double standards. He contrasted the coverage of the poster destruction with an incident in Lagos the previous week, where individuals covered opposition posters with President Tinubu’s image. Keyamo alleged that media outlets labeled the latter as political intimidation while giving subtle praise to opposition-linked stunts.
The Minister urged APC supporters to refrain from retaliating, claiming that the opposition’s broader strategy is to paint the ruling party as unelectable to justify their eventual failure at the polls. Keyamo expressed confidence that the ruling party would defeat its rivals in the upcoming 2027 elections. He stated that the world should take note of what is happening in Nigeria by a defeated, disorganised, disoriented and confused opposition.
Keyamo’s statement comes as the country prepares for the 2027 general election. The Minister’s comments are likely to stir up controversy and spark reactions from opposition parties. The opposition parties have not commented on Keyamo’s allegations.
The incident has raised concerns about the level of political tension and the desperation of political parties ahead of the 2027 elections. Keyamo’s allegations have also raised questions about the role of the media in reporting political events and the impact of their coverage on the electoral process.
The 2027 general election is expected to be a crucial one, with the APC and other parties vying for power. Keyamo’s confidence in the APC’s victory is a reflection of the party’s determination to retain power. The opposition parties, on the other hand, are likely to intensify their campaigns and criticize the APC’s performance.
