The Policy Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, briefed journalists at the Government House in Umuahia about the upcoming event. He stated that the Igbo Day celebration is an opportunity for the Igbo people to reflect on their sense of oneness and organic solidarity. The theme of this year's celebration, 'Njiko Ka', which translates to 'Togetherness is best', underscores the importance of unity among the Igbo people.
The 2026 Igbo Day celebration will commence on September 28 with a public lecture titled 'Igbo Charter of Strategic Engagement for National Development'. Renowned economist and former presidential candidate, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, will deliver the lecture at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia. The lecture will focus on a strategic document articulating the aspirations and development priorities of Ndigbo.
According to Dr. Chukwu, the Igbo Charter of Strategic Engagement for National Development was developed by an inclusive committee of over 100 eminent Igbo professionals and stakeholders. The charter aims to provide a framework for engaging the wider Nigerian society and the global community. The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator John Azuta Mbata, will deliver a welcome address and formally declare Igbo Day 2026 open at the event.
The main celebration on September 29 will hold at the Michael Okpara Square Events Centre in Umuahia. The event will begin with a laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph and an inter-denominational church service, followed by festivities at the Michael Okpara Auditorium. The grand finale will feature the President General's State of the Union Address, a traditional march-past, goodwill messages, cultural displays, and presentations by youth groups.
Ohanaeze chapters and affiliate organisations from different parts of Nigeria, as well as Diaspora chapters, are expected to participate in the celebration. Igbo leaders from the clergy, academia, traditional institutions, women, and youth groups will also attend the event. Dr. Chukwu expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government and Governor Alex Otti for accepting to host the 2026 edition of the Igbo Day celebration.
