The Democratic Republic of Congo has successfully mobilized 2.9 billion USD from a coalition of developing and emerging countries (G20+) to combat the Ebola outbreak. According to a communiqué received by the Congolese Press Agency (ACP), this funding will be used to support the response efforts and address the ongoing health crisis. The focus now shifts to rapidly disbursing the funds, coordinating interventions, and ensuring the traceability of resources.
The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Judith Suminwa, has emphasized the importance of transparency in the management of these funds. She stated that every dollar must be tracked from its financial commitment to its effective implementation on the ground and the results obtained from the communities. This requirement aligns with her call for greater transparency in the management of financing.
To achieve this goal, Africa CDC, in collaboration with the Congolese government, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other partners, plans to strengthen the financial monitoring mechanism for the response. The objective is to accelerate the arrival of resources on the front lines, clearly identify funding deficits, and maintain national leadership at the center of coordination.
The Congolese government has already disbursed 50 million USD from its own funds to support the response efforts. However, the government estimates that an additional 1.4 billion USD is needed to strengthen surveillance, diagnosis, care, protection of health professionals, and community action. The Prime Minister stressed the central role of communities in the fight against the disease.
The approach centered on villages should involve traditional and religious leaders, women, young people, survivors, and community relays in decision-making and interventions. The Prime Minister emphasized that the communities must be at the forefront of the fight against Ebola, stating that "we will not defeat Ebola in place of the communities, we will defeat it with them".
Despite a decrease in cases observed in some areas of Ituri, the Prime Minister called for sustained efforts, highlighting that transmission remains active in certain zones and the risk of extension to other provinces and neighboring countries persists. She warned that progress should encourage intensification of the response, not relaxation.
With the 2.9 billion USD mobilized, the Congolese authorities and their partners aim to move to the next stage: ensuring that the announced resources are effectively disbursed, coordinated, and oriented towards priority needs on the ground, with measurable results for affected communities. The Prime Minister thanked the partners engaged in the response and emphasized the need to rapidly translate financial commitments into concrete interventions for the benefit of affected populations.
