A violent incident has occurred in Yei, Central Equatoria State, South Sudan, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old student, Martin Wani. According to reports, Wani was shot by an unidentified gunman in Hai Dileb, Luparate Sub-Boma, approximately 4km north of Yei town, on October 1, 2026. The victim, a Senior Three student at Excell International School, was attacked while returning home from town at around 7pm.

Local authorities have provided details of the incident, stating that Wani encountered an armed man who had allegedly hidden near a water kiosk. The suspect reportedly robbed Wani of his mobile phone before shooting him in the back. Wani was taken to Yei Civil Hospital for treatment but later died from severe blood loss. His brother, Clement Ita Alex, confirmed the incident, stating that Wani sustained a gunshot wound to the back.

The headman of Hai Dileb, Timayo Lole, has condemned the killing, describing it as shocking and disturbing for residents. Lole stated that Wani was an innocent young man who, to his knowledge, had no disputes or conflicts with anyone in the community. The incident has raised concerns among residents, with many calling for increased security measures in the area.

John Bakata Sindani, the head chief of Luparate Boma, has expressed concerns about growing insecurity in the area, including reports of armed individuals and roadside robberies. Sindani called for increased police patrols in Luparate to strengthen security and help apprehend those responsible for the killing. He emphasized the need for a culture of resolving issues peacefully rather than taking innocent lives.

The police have confirmed that the case has been referred to the county police post for further action. Mario Kenyi, a CID officer at Luparate Police Outpost, stated that investigations are underway to identify and arrest the suspected gunman. Kenyi assured residents that they should not be afraid to report incidents, and the police will intervene immediately.
