A recent road crash at Mlima Kiu in Salama, Kenya, has resulted in 17 fatalities, renewing concerns about the safety of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. The accident occurred on a stretch of road known as a black spot, where residents and motorists say fatal crashes have become disturbingly frequent. Despite its name, "Salama", which means safety in Kiswahili, the area has become synonymous with devastating road crashes.

The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, a major transportation artery, changes configuration at Machakos Junction, transitioning from a dual carriageway to a single carriageway towards Salama. This narrow section of the highway has been identified as a contributing factor to the high number of accidents. Motorists have reported cases of speeding, overlapping, and risky overtaking as they compete for space on the busy highway.

The transition from a dual carriageway to a single carriageway significantly reduces the room for manoeuvre, leaving motorists with limited options to avoid collisions. Drivers who regularly use the route say this section is one of the most challenging parts of the journey to Mombasa. The area's notorious reputation is further highlighted by the presence of multiple accident sites and the number of fatalities.

Residents who witnessed the recent crash described a devastating scene, with several victims dying on the spot while others were trapped inside the wreckage. This tragedy is the latest in a long list of accidents at Mlima Kiu, with a family nearby having lost their patriarch in another crash just two weeks prior. A boda boda rider also survived a crash on the same stretch three months ago, but his passenger did not.

Truck drivers who regularly ply the Nairobi-Mombasa route cite fatigue, reckless driving, and poor lane discipline as significant risks, particularly on long-distance journeys. The configuration of the road compounds the danger when a driver loses control, leaving motorists with few options to avoid a collision. Residents and motorists are calling for urgent interventions to improve safety.

The Salama Police Station yard contains the wreckage of vehicles involved in different crashes, each bearing testimony to accidents that have occurred on the surrounding roads. Residents are demanding the expansion of the highway into a dual carriageway, which they argue would separate opposing traffic and reduce the likelihood of head-on collisions.

The latest tragedy has renewed questions over the safety of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway and whether infrastructure improvements, coupled with stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, could prevent more lives from being lost on the road. Residents and motorists are advocating for change, seeking a reduction in the number of accidents and fatalities on this stretch of road.
