The Association of Private Press Editors (Assep) and the Personal Data Protection Authority (APDP) organized a two-day workshop in Bamako, Mali, from September 17-18, 2026. Boubacar Yalkoué, President of Assep, emphasized the significance of the workshop, noting that the digital revolution has dramatically changed the way information is collected, verified, and disseminated. He stressed that journalists have a responsibility to ensure that their reporting does not harm individuals or communities. Yalkoué highlighted the importance of finding a balance between the right to information and the right to privacy, saying that this is a daily challenge for journalists.
The workshop comes at a time when the media landscape in Mali is facing numerous challenges. The country has experienced significant turmoil in recent years, including security concerns and changes in the media landscape. The training aimed to enhance participants' understanding of data protection laws and regulations, as well as international best practices for press freedom and human rights.
Key stakeholders, including the President of APDP, Pr. Mamoudou Samassékou, and representatives from the High Authority of Communication (HAC) and the Maison de la Presse, were in attendance. The event demonstrated the commitment of Malian media organizations and regulatory bodies to promoting responsible journalism and protecting human rights.
The training program covered topics such as data protection principles, consent, and the rights of individuals. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, group discussions, and case studies to enhance their understanding of the complex issues surrounding data protection and press freedom. By strengthening the capacities of media professionals, the workshop aimed to promote a culture of responsible reporting and respect for human rights.
