Algeria has reported 108 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 12 new deaths over the past 24 hours, according to Djamel Fourar, spokesperson for the Scientific Committee monitoring the evolution of the pandemic. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 2268 and deaths to 348. The new deaths were recorded across eight provinces, including Alger, Blida, Bejaïa, Khenchela, Ouargla, Skikda, Tipasa, and Annaba.
The number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 in Algeria has reached 783, while the number of cases under treatment has reached 3495, comprising 1424 confirmed cases by laboratory analysis and 2071 suspected cases diagnosed by radiology and scanner. Dr. Fourar also stated that 59 patients are still in intensive care. The confirmed cases have been recorded across 47 provinces, with 69% concentrated in eight provinces: Blida, Alger, Oran, Sétif, Tipasa, Tizi-Ouzou, and Ain Defla.
Dr. Fourar revealed that the average age of those affected is 53% for the category between 24 and 60 years old, while it is 38% for those aged 60 and above. He also stated that all deaths have been recorded across 38 provinces, with 52% in Alger and Blida. Furthermore, 24 provinces have not recorded any cases, while 16 provinces have recorded between one and three cases.
In the province of Tizi-Ouzou, six new positive cases and one death were recorded on April 16. The positive cases were recorded in the hospital establishments of Azefoun, Azazga, and the provincial capital. This brings the total number of positive cases in the province to 93. The death recorded concerns the EPH of Tigzirt, a 86-year-old subject from the village of Boukellal in the locality of Iflissen.
Dr. Fourar emphasized that the green number (3030) remains available to citizens to respond to their concerns, reiterating the imperative of respecting the recommendations of specialists regarding personal and environmental hygiene rules, as well as sanitary confinement conditions. He also stressed the importance of adhering to these measures to combat the spread of the virus.
The distribution of cases across provinces highlights the varying impact of the pandemic across Algeria. While some provinces have recorded a significant number of cases, others have not reported any. This disparity underscores the need for continued vigilance and adherence to health guidelines to prevent further spread.
