Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) board chairperson Helliate Rushwaya has been approved by Rwanda as Zimbabwe's ambassador to the country. She is expected to replace Charity Manyeruke, a former University of Zimbabwe professor. Rushwaya is the younger sister to Henrietta Rushwaya and a former Non-Executive Board Member at the ZBC.

The approval of Rushwaya's appointment marks the first publicly confirmed appointment in President Emmerson Mnangagwa's wider diplomatic reshuffle. The planned changes could affect around 21 ambassadors, including Zimbabwe's envoy to the United Kingdom, retired army colonel Christian Katsande. Some diplomats are expected to be recalled permanently, while others may be reassigned to different missions.

Zimbabwe's ambassadors to the United Nations and the United States are expected to remain in their posts, along with about four others. A group of 21 new diplomats is also undergoing training in preparation for foreign-service assignments. This move is part of an effort to give Zimbabwe's diplomatic missions a stronger focus on tourism, trade, and investment.

President Mnangagwa has told diplomats to promote the country's image and highlight developments in sectors such as agriculture, mining, and education. The government also wants its envoys to help attract investment and expand trade ties, while working to ease Zimbabwe's international isolation. The President is said to believe that some diplomats have underperformed or remained in the same postings for too long.

The scale of the proposed changes suggests the exercise could alter Zimbabwe's representation across a substantial part of its overseas network. The country maintains about 40 embassies and roughly 10 consulates. Rushwaya's posting will also mean a change in leadership at ZBC, where she currently chairs the board.

Among the figures being considered for diplomatic postings are retired Lieutenant General Engelbert Rugeje and former ministers Miriam Chikukwa and Mike Bimha. Their names have emerged as Mnangagwa's administration prepares new representatives, but no complete list of appointments or destinations has been announced.

Rushwaya's diplomatic appointment has received approval from Rwanda, but a full announcement of Zimbabwe's new ambassadorial line-up is still awaited. The reshuffle is expected to have a significant impact on Zimbabwe's diplomatic presence globally.
