The Urban West Regional Police Force in Zanzibar has made significant strides in combating crime, arresting 441 suspects for various offenses. According to Regional Police Commander Elthon Banzi, the security situation in the region remains stable following a series of targeted operations. These operations have led to the recovery of stolen property, including 29 motorcycles, two bajajis, four cattle, and a boat allegedly used for smuggling stolen motorcycles.
The police operations have successfully dismantled notorious crime syndicates, including gangs led by Salehe Jangiani, Amis Aji Hamisi, and Amis Majala Samson, who face armed robbery charges. Additionally, two suspects were arrested at Darajani for impersonating State security personnel, and were found in possession of Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar uniforms, a toy pistol, and a replica AK-47 rifle. These arrests demonstrate the police force's commitment to maintaining peace and order in the region.
Road safety has also been a major concern, with 11 deaths resulting from 15 accidents over a two-month period. Commander Banzi noted that non-compliant bodaboda riders were the primary culprits in these accidents. To address this issue, the police force has announced a rigorous crackdown on motorcycle riders and passengers caught without helmets, set to begin on October 5, 2026.
Under the new helmet policy, any rider or passenger caught without a helmet will be detained and required to present two brand-new helmets, accompanied by purchase receipts, before release or arraignment. Both riders and passengers face a fine of Sh80,000 each for non-compliance with traffic regulations. This move aims to reduce the number of accidents and promote road safety in the region.
The police force has also stepped up community policing initiatives, including a joint security walk scheduled for October 3, 2026, starting from Ziwani and led by Urban West Regional Commissioner Mohammed Abdalla. This community engagement aims to promote cooperation between law enforcement and residents, ensuring a safer environment for all.
Commander Banzi has assured residents of robust security ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains, warning criminals against exploiting the weather conditions. The police force remains committed to maintaining peace and order in the region, and residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity.
Local residents have reacted to the helmet directive, with Kikwajuni resident Said Shaaban Abuka noting that lax compliance remains a chronic issue among commercial riders. He observed that few riders adhere strictly to the regulations, with many operating informally. The police force will need to work closely with the community to ensure the success of the new helmet policy.
