The Zamfara State Government has taken a significant step to improve the welfare of its health workers by approving a 95 per cent increase in their salaries. This new salary structure, which came into effect on September 7, 2026, is based on the Federal Government's approved health-sector salary structures, specifically the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). According to a circular dated September 10, 2026, signed by the Head of Civil Service, Shehu Baraya, the salary review aims to reposition the health sector and enhance the working conditions of health personnel. The circular was addressed to various stakeholders, including the Secretary to the State Government, commissioners, and heads of extra-ministerial departments. The government expressed optimism that the improved remuneration would boost the wellbeing, motivation, and morale of health workers.
The adjustment in salary is expected to strengthen the health workforce and create a conducive environment for quality healthcare delivery in the state. The government, however, urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate this gesture with greater commitment, hard work, dedication, and professionalism. Health workers were reminded to maintain discipline, observe prescribed working hours, and adhere strictly to public service rules and regulations.
The circular also contains a revised CONHESS basic salary table covering various grades and steps, as well as hazard allowances for clinical and non-clinical health workers. The hazard allowance schedule lists different allocations for clinical and non-clinical workers based on their salary grades. For instance, clinical health workers on salary grades 1–5 are to receive N15,200, while non-clinical workers are allocated N14,250.
Under the new hazard allowance schedule, workers on grades 6–12 will receive N30,400 for clinical workers and N28,500 for non-clinical workers. For grades 13–15, clinical workers are allocated N32,300, while non-clinical workers are listed at N30,400. The government directed heads of ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure that affected personnel are informed of the salary review and its objectives.
