Concerned youths in Nigeria have called on the Federal Government to suspend the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, amid allegations of academic fraud, impersonation, and other misconduct. The Integrity Youth Alliance (IYA) made this appeal in an open letter to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, dated October 1.

The IYA noted that the allegations against Ogunwole are weighty and disturbing, requiring a thorough, independent, and impartial investigation. The group stressed that it does not seek to convict Ogunwole through the media but rather create conditions for the truth to be established through lawful and credible investigative processes.

The allegations against Ogunwole reportedly include academic fraud, impersonation, forgery, falsification of official documents, alleged irregular or illegal appointment, privacy violations, workplace harassment, victimisation, cyberbullying, and threats to life. The IYA believes that Ogunwole's suspension is necessary to save the integrity of the investigation into the alleged indiscretions.

As the chief executive and administrative head of FUOYE, the Vice-Chancellor's continued occupation of the office while being investigated could create concerns about the independence and effectiveness of the investigations. The IYA argued that allowing Ogunwole to remain in control could undermine confidence in the process, especially regarding university records, personnel, and administrative decisions.

The requested suspension is not intended as punishment or a declaration of guilt but as an administrative measure to protect the investigation's integrity, preserve evidence, and prevent interference. The IYA also called on Ogunwole to make himself available to the Nigeria Police Force and other competent investigative authorities handling the allegations.

If the allegations against Ogunwole are false, the IYA stated that he should welcome the opportunity to present relevant documents, witnesses, and credible evidence to establish the truth and clear his name through due process. The group emphasised that no media campaign or public relations effort can substitute for a lawful investigation.

The IYA's call for Ogunwole's suspension and cooperation with investigations highlights the need for transparency and accountability in Nigeria's higher education sector. The Federal Government's response to these allegations will be crucial in determining the next steps for FUOYE and its leadership.
