The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Young Planners' Forum (NITP-YPF), Oyo State Chapter, recently convened a gathering of professionals in the built environment to discuss synergy and delineation of roles. The event, themed "Synergy and Delineation Amongst Professionals in the Built Environment," took place in Ibadan. State Coordinator of NITP-YPF, Tpl. Opeyemi Ojo, noted that the built environment is shaped by distinct professionals with statutory functions, including town planners, architects, engineers, and surveyors.

Ojo emphasized that challenges such as rapid urbanization, housing deficits, and climate change require a collaborative approach. She listed town planners, architects, engineers, surveyors, quantity surveyors, estate surveyors and valuers, builders, and environmental professionals as critical stakeholders. According to Ojo, delineation should promote clarity, accountability, and professional standards, rather than create rivalry. The maiden AGM was historic for strengthening bonds among young planners and other professionals.

The keynote address was delivered by Tpl. Dr. David Olawale, Chairman of NITP Lagos State Chapter. He defined the roles of the seven core professions established by law. Dr. Olawale explained that town planners advise on development locations and types, surveyors define land boundaries, architects design, quantity surveyors determine costs, engineers ensure structural integrity, builders construct, and estate surveyors manage properties.

Dr. Olawale identified ignorance, ego, client pressure, and institutional failure as sources of conflict in the built environment. He cited instances of professionals breaching boundaries, such as architects preparing layout schemes and engineers signing building plans as planners. Dr. Olawale emphasized that synergy is crucial due to Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, and modern investor demands for coordinated teams.

Tpl. Olufemi Akindele, Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Local Government Pensions Board, and Chairman of the occasion, stressed that mistakes by any professional manifest in urban spaces. Akindele advocated for synergy and clearly defined boundaries to curb building collapses and ensure timely project delivery. He urged professionals not to take jobs outside their competence, emphasizing that each professional should respect their role and that of others.

The event featured the inauguration of new executives, panel sessions, awards, and recognition, as well as the presentation of symposium recommendations. The NITP-YPF Oyo State Chapter Week aimed to foster collaboration and understanding among professionals in the built environment.

The discussion on synergy and delineation of roles among professionals in the built environment is ongoing. The engagement by NITP-YPF aims to promote a collaborative approach to addressing challenges in the sector.
