Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH) has achieved a significant medical breakthrough with the successful conduct of a total hip replacement surgery on a young man. The patient, suffering from sickle cell disease, had developed death of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply to the top part of the thigh bone. This condition, medically known as avascular necrosis, was successfully treated with the hip replacement surgery.
The surgery, which was carried out on Saturday, was led by Dr Lawan Yari, alongside Dr Musa Abdulmalik, Dr Bashok Palagvi, Mr Manasseh Jonah, and Mr Karumi Ibrahim. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Gana, briefed the press on the development on Sunday, describing the surgery as a landmark achievement. This operation was previously not available in the state, and Dr Gana hailed the hospital for conducting "the rare surgery".
