Yango Ride recently organized two safety events in Yaoundé and Douala, bringing together partner drivers and couriers, road safety authorities, health professionals, and digital security specialists. The events, held under the theme "Your Safety, Our Priority," aimed to provide practical training, health and wellbeing checks, and demonstrations of in-app safety tools. The events were conducted in partnership with the Cameroon Red Cross, Calex Optics, and CareHelp.
The safety events included free eyesight testing for partner drivers, alongside blood pressure and general wellness checks. Good vision is crucial for people who spend significant time on the road. Participants requiring corrective attention received guidance on next steps, while the broader health checks gave partner drivers an opportunity to identify potential wellbeing concerns. In Yaoundé, the Cameroon Red Cross also conducted CPR training, giving participants practical skills that can be used when responding to emergencies.
Dr. Clovis Pilla, Country Manager, Yango Cameroon, emphasized the importance of supporting partner drivers' wellbeing. He stated that basic measures such as eyesight and blood pressure checks can help drivers pay greater attention to their health, while practical safety training gives them knowledge they can apply on the road. The events also included live demonstrations of safety features available in the Yango app, such as sharing a live trip with a trusted contact, setting an emergency contact, and reporting an incident.
The events created a forum for discussions involving road safety authorities, law enforcement representatives, health professionals, digital security specialists, and Yango Ride representatives. The discussions addressed everyday safety challenges, including driver fatigue, fraudulent calls and scams, responsible road behavior, digital security, and effective use of in-app safety tools. The sessions highlighted the role that drivers, couriers, passengers, institutions, and technology platforms can each play in contributing to safer journeys.
The events were attended by local stakeholders, including representatives of the Mayor of the City of Yaoundé, local police authorities, and a representative of the Ministry of Transport. Yango partner drivers, such as Otabela Valery, appreciated the initiative, stating that it was a great opportunity to discuss challenges and share concerns. Nsane Mitan Paul Sen, a Yango partner driver in Douala, added that the practical knowledge gained was valuable and could be applied in daily work.
The events also included interactive activities, such as a Safety Quiz Challenge covering road rules, emergency procedures, and Yango safety features. The quiz aimed to reinforce safety knowledge among participants.
