The World Bank Group (WBG) has mobilized nearly $6.7 billion in private capital for Egypt since fiscal year 2022. This significant investment is part of the WBG's efforts to support Egypt's economic development and growth. The WBG's global private capital mobilization reached a record $112 billion in FY2026, up from $35 billion four years earlier.
The WBG's private capital mobilization in Egypt has supported various projects across different sectors. In renewable energy, the WBG partnered with AMEA Power to support solar and battery storage projects. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) provided approximately $289.9 million in financing and blended-finance resources, while mobilizing over $1 billion from private investors and partners for four projects.
The renewable energy projects supported by the WBG are expected to expand Egypt's clean electricity supply. The Abydos I and II solar plants, Amunet Wind, and Egypt's first utility-scale battery energy storage system are some of the projects that have been implemented. These projects are expected to serve around one million people and generate over 4,000 construction jobs.
In addition to renewable energy, the WBG has also supported private investment in Egypt's maritime infrastructure. The development of a multipurpose terminal at Safaga on the Red Sea by Abu Dhabi Ports Group is one such project. The IFC provided $61 million in loans and mobilized up to $158.9 million in private capital for the project, which is expected to handle approximately 450,000 containers annually.
The WBG has also supported Egypt's housing finance market through the Egypt Inclusive Housing Finance Programme. The programme has helped around 750,000 low-income families access affordable homes through mortgage financing. For every EGP 100 in public subsidies, commercial banks have contributed EGP 650 in mortgage financing, turning $441 million in government support into $2.88 billion in total private mortgage financing.
Furthermore, the WBG's Catalysing Entrepreneurship for Job Creation Project has helped strengthen Egypt's startup ecosystem. The project has attracted over $200 million in private investment and approximately $450 million in foreign direct investment, supporting around 150 startups and high-growth businesses. The project has contributed to an estimated 130,000 jobs, 40 percent of which went to women.
The investments form part of the World Bank Group's partnership with Egypt under its FY2023–2027 Country Partnership Framework. The framework focuses on expanding private-sector employment, improving human capital outcomes, and strengthening resilience to economic and environmental shocks. Egypt's real GDP growth is projected to hit 5.1 percent in FY2025/2026, up from 4.4 percent in FY2024/2025.
