Accra-based car rental marketplace WopeCar has launched a mobile app, allowing travelers to book cars, verify their identity, and arrange airport pickup before arriving in Ghana. The app, available on iOS and Android, offers an end-to-end booking process, enabling users to choose a vehicle, upload identification documents, pay, and confirm pickup or airport meeting points. This development aims to simplify the car rental process for visitors, particularly during Ghana's peak travel season in December.
The launch of the WopeCar app is timed to coincide with the peak travel season, when thousands of visitors arrive in Ghana for concerts, festivals, heritage experiences, and family reunions. According to the Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana recorded 141,186 international arrivals in December 2025, an 11.35% increase over the same month in 2024. The app seeks to address the demand for reliable transportation that can be arranged before travelers arrive in Ghana.
WopeCar's founder, Yusif, emphasized the need for a streamlined car rental process, citing instances where travelers would arrive at Accra International Airport after long flights, only to start making calls to arrange transportation. The app aims to eliminate this hassle, allowing users to book and manage their car rentals from anywhere. The platform operates a two-sided marketplace, enabling renters to book self-drive or chauffeur-driven vehicles, while car owners can list their idle vehicles.
The WopeCar app offers a range of features, including the ability to upload identification documents for verification, pay by card or Mobile Money, and confirm vehicle pickup or airport meeting points. Once the trip starts, the app handles messaging the driver, extending rentals, and managing bookings. The platform also provides car owners with a view of their bookings and earnings.
In addition to the mobile app, WopeCar has launched a rebuilt website, offering multi-currency pricing in USD, EUR, and GHS. The website features rebuilt pages for airport rentals, self-drive hire, and December travel. The platform operates in Greater Accra and the Ashanti Region, offering a range of vehicles, including sedans, mid-size SUVs, 4x4s, buses, and pickups.
The demand for advanced ground transport becomes significant during Ghana's peak December travel season. WopeCar's app seeks to address this demand, providing a reliable and efficient car rental process. The platform's "Share Your Car" page allows car owners to list their idle vehicles, which are approved once all requirements, including insurance cover, are met.
The WopeCar app is available now on the App Store and will soon be launched on Google Play. Booking is also available on the company's website, wopecar.com.
