Winnie Odinga, a Member of Parliament for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), has announced her intention to run for the Nairobi senate seat in the 2027 general elections. Her declaration has sparked speculation about her political affiliations, with many Kenyans wondering whether she will contest under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) or the Linda Mwananchi movement.

Odinga's decision to run for the senate seat was made public on October 15, during the first anniversary of her father, Raila Odinga's, passing. She stated that she would be contesting the seat alongside young people, citing the need for generational change in leadership. This move has been seen as a significant step in her political career, with many Kenyans eagerly awaiting her next move.

Despite her announcement, Odinga has failed to clarify her stance on whether she supports the ODM leadership or the Linda Mwananchi movement. Her absence from two key meetings, including the launch of Linda Mwananchi's headquarters in Nairobi and an ODM meeting at the Jacaranda grounds, has fueled speculation about her political leanings.

Odinga's relationship with ODM leaders has been strained since her father's passing. In January, she criticized party leaders for attempting to take control of the party, stating that they had "hijacked" the party's leadership. Her comments sparked a heated debate within the party, with some leaders accusing her of being disloyal.

In the Linda Mwananchi movement, Odinga faces competition from Crystal Asige, a special senator who has been campaigning alongside Edwin Sifuna. Sifuna and other Linda Mwananchi leaders have endorsed Babu Owino, the MP for Embakasi East, to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat. Faith Odhiambo, the former president of the Law Society of Kenya, is also vying for the Nairobi women's representative seat.

Political analysts have opined that Odinga's chances of winning the senate seat are high if she can rally support from her constituents and articulate her vision clearly. However, her indecision on which party to use has raised concerns about her ability to unite her supporters. Prof. Lumala Masibo notes that Odinga must engage with voters and define her position to succeed.

Odinga's family dynamics have also come into play, with her brother, Raila Junior, expressing support for her political ambitions but also indicating that he may contest against her under the ODM ticket. The sibling rivalry has added a new layer of complexity to Odinga's already challenging campaign.
