East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga is navigating a complex political landscape as she considers her options for the 2027 Nairobi senatorial election. Having declared her interest in the seat on October 15, Winnie has yet to publicly align herself with either the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) or the Linda Mwananchi Movement. This uncertainty was evident when she skipped two major political events over the weekend: the unveiling of Linda Mwananchi officials and the launch of its Nairobi headquarters, as well as an ODM rally at Jacaranda Grounds.

Winnie's absence from these events has raised questions about her party loyalty and preferred election vehicle. A front-row seat had been reserved for her at the Linda Mwananchi launch in Lavington, but she failed to attend, despite her public association with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, the party leader of Linda Mwananchi Movement. The event was attended by opposition leaders, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Meanwhile, posters bearing Winnie's image and her senatorial ambitions were widely circulated on social media ahead of the ODM rally, but she was conspicuously absent.

Winnie's mixed signals about her political allegiance have been evident since she declared her interest in the Nairobi Senate seat. Speaking during the event marking the first anniversary of her father's death last month, Winnie said she had decided to end speculation about her political future by declaring her interest in the Nairobi Senate seat. She stated that she would run for senator, citing a vacancy in the seat as Edwin Sifuna was seeking another office. Her remarks were widely interpreted as an indication that she was leaning towards Linda Mwananchi.

However, even within Linda Mwananchi, Winnie's path to the Senate is far from clear. She faces competition from nominated Senator Crystal Asige, whose political profile is rising within the outfit and who has accompanied Mr Sifuna on political tours across the country. There is also the question of how the party will manage competing ambitions for Nairobi's elective seats. Mr Sifuna and other Linda Mwananchi leaders have openly backed Embakasi East MP Babu Owino for governor, while former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo is eyeing the women's representative position.

On the ODM side, Winnie faces competition from within the Odinga family's political network. Her brother, Raila Odinga Junior, has endorsed Lang'ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang'o, for the Nairobi Senate seat and maintained that he would only reconsider his position if Winnie secured the party's nomination. Winnie's strained relationship with ODM's current leadership has further complicated her political position following her father's death. In February, Winnie openly criticised the decision to remove Edwin Sifuna as ODM secretary-general.

Winnie has been sending mixed signals about her party loyalty, having largely avoided public political gatherings. On Monday, she posted a snapshot poll asking her Instagram followers about the right outfit for her bid, with a majority picking Linda Mwananchi Movement and others suggesting she run on ODM. Her uncertain political positioning has sparked speculation about her preferred election vehicle and potential alliances. The competing ambitions within Linda Mwananchi and ODM could complicate the parties' efforts to agree on candidates for the various Nairobi seats.

As the 2027 election approaches, Winnie's decision on her party allegiance and election vehicle will be crucial in determining her chances of securing the Nairobi senatorial seat. With multiple options on the table, Winnie must navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries within her family's political network and the opposition parties. Her strained relationship with ODM's current leadership and her association with Linda Mwananchi leaders will likely play a significant role in her ultimate decision.
