A wind power project in Usokami, Mufindi District, Iringa Region, is bringing economic opportunities to surrounding communities by easing access to electricity. The project, worth over Sh50 billion, is being implemented by Mwenge Hydro Power Limited and has a generation capacity of 3.9 megawatts. It is expected to benefit over 9,000 people in 32 villages across six wards in Mufindi District Council. The investment aims to improve access to electricity and support economic activities that depend on reliable power.

The project is expected to support small businesses and the production of goods needed by local communities. Regional Commissioner Kheri James recently visited industries in the area and urged village leaders to encourage residents to protect the project's infrastructure. He emphasized that the investment benefits the community and encouraged residents to use this opportunity to access electricity to strengthen their economic activities and improve their livelihoods.

Mwenge Hydro Power Limited manager Deogratius Massawe stated that the company aims to ensure residents have access to a reliable and affordable electricity supply. He noted that access to electricity can create economic opportunities, strengthen production and business activities, and stimulate development in communities surrounding the project. The company's goal is to support the local economy through reliable power.

Beneficiaries of the project have reported positive changes in their lives since the availability of electricity. Michael Mahenge, speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, said that the project has made economic activities easier to undertake. He mentioned that the availability of electricity has enabled residents to start small-scale production activities in the village, including maize milling.

The project has reduced the inconvenience of traveling elsewhere to obtain essential services and created opportunities for entrepreneurs to increase their incomes through productive activities. Maize milling is one of the services that can benefit from improved rural electricity access, allowing residents to obtain services closer to their homes while enabling entrepreneurs to operate machinery-based businesses.

To fully assess the project's economic benefits, factors such as service costs, the number of households and businesses connected to electricity, and changes in entrepreneurs' earnings since the supply became available need to be evaluated. Data on actual electricity generation, the number of users served, and the cost of the service would help establish the project's contribution to local economic development.

The project highlights the role of investment in the energy sector in creating opportunities for rural production and trade. Community participation in protecting the infrastructure will be crucial in ensuring the continued provision of electricity. For residents of Usokami and neighboring villages, the expectation is that access to electricity will continue to ease daily activities, create income-generating opportunities, and contribute to community development.
