Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that Chief Daniel Orbih, the late National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, South South, rejected several inducements and pressure to abandon his support for Wike's 2015 governorship ambition in Rivers State. Wike made this disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja at a night of tributes held in honour of Orbih, who died on August 31 at the age of 64.
According to Wike, Orbih remained loyal to him during a difficult political period between 2013 and 2014, despite attempts by his political opponents to frustrate his ambition. Wike recalled that the then Rivers State governor sent people to Orbih with offers aimed at persuading him to withdraw his support. Wike described Orbih as the person God used to pave the way for his emergence as governor of Rivers State in 2015.
Wike went on to explain that Orbih's support went beyond mere political backing, as he helped strengthen Wike's campaign and security arrangements, including donating two bulletproof Mercedes-Benz buses. Orbih also mobilised political structures across the South South in support of Wike's ambition. Wike described Orbih as a politician more interested in loyalty and service than personal benefits.
The FCT minister noted that Orbih never approached him for contracts or favours during his eight years as governor, a testament to his selfless service. Wike credited Orbih with helping to protect the political interests of the South South, saying many politicians who currently occupy elective offices benefited from his efforts.
Wike urged stakeholders in Edo State to consider giving Orbih a state burial, citing his contributions to politics and the development of the state. He also promised to maintain his relationship with Orbih's family and support efforts to preserve his political legacy. Other speakers at the event, including Senator Magnus Abe and former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole, praised Orbih's bridge-building skills and lasting impact on politics.
Senator Sandy Onor, a former PDP presidential candidate, described Orbih as a public intellectual, patriot, family man, and defender of Edo heritage. He noted that Orbih left a lasting impact on the people around him through his public service and commitment to his community. The tributes highlighted Orbih's remarkable life and legacy in Nigerian politics.
Key to Wike's success in 2015 was Orbih's unwavering support, which he acknowledged as instrumental in his emergence as governor. Orbih's commitment to loyalty and service serves as a shining example for politicians, Wike said. The event celebrated Orbih's life and legacy, with attendees paying tribute to his remarkable contributions to Nigerian politics.
