Nigeria's Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has emphasized that his primary political goal is to ensure the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking to journalists in Abuja after inspecting ongoing road projects, Wike stated that his main concern is supporting Tinubu's administration beyond 2027. He made it clear that he will prioritize Tinubu's re-election with all his might and strength.
Wike also addressed allegations that the cross-party Rainbow Coalition, which he is associated with, was established to destabilize existing political parties. He described these claims as "baseless" and explained that the coalition aims to unite individuals from different political platforms who support Tinubu's administration. According to Wike, the coalition does not seek to prevent anyone from supporting other political interests but encourages its members to support Tinubu.
The Minister expressed disappointment over claims that the Rainbow Coalition would destabilize political parties. He questioned why similar concerns were not raised during the 2023 general elections when the G5 governors played a significant role. Wike pointed out that the G5 did not disrupt the political structure, and Tinubu won the election. He argued that the current concerns surrounding the Rainbow Coalition have undertones and are not genuinely about destabilization.
Wike acknowledged that the G5 may have provided some political advantage but emphasized that this was not sufficient reason for the current concerns. He recalled that he contested the 2022 presidential primaries and came second, adding that his political experience has exposed him to the complexities of Nigerian politics. Wike expressed confidence that he would not be at loggerheads with Tinubu's interests regarding future political developments.
The Minister dismissed speculation that his current political realignment is aimed at positioning himself for the presidency in 2031. He emphasized that God's plans are paramount and that one must be alive to see future opportunities. Wike stated that by 2031, Tinubu would not be running, and he would support the President's preferred successor.
Wike inspected ongoing road projects in the FCT, including the Inner Southern Expressway and the service lanes of the Southern Parkway. He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work, assuring that the projects would be delivered before the January 2027 general elections. The Minister commended the contractors for maintaining high standards and reiterated Tinubu's administration commitment to fulfilling its promises.
