The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has intervened to grant 5,990 education officers in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) another opportunity to participate in the 2026 promotion examination. The officers were initially unable to sit for the August 2025 promotion examination due to a disruption at the examination venue. Wike's intervention allows them to take part in the current exercise, which commenced on October 5, 2026.

The examination, which is currently underway, has seen a large turnout of education officers seeking promotion across Grade Levels 13 to 17. According to the Head of the FCTA Civil Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, the exercise has been conducted in an orderly and disciplined manner. She expressed satisfaction with the turnout and commended the officers for their commitment to their professional development.

The FCTA Civil Service Commission Chairman, Emeka Ezeh, confirmed that approximately 5,990 education officers are participating in the current phase of the exercise. Ezeh noted that the examination covers officers seeking advancement from Grade Level 13 to 14 and up to Grade Level 17. He cautioned the candidates against allowing external interests or political considerations to influence their professional advancement.

The promotion exercise is merit-based, and opportunities are available at lower levels, according to Nathan. She explained that the hierarchical structure of the civil service and the implementation of the harmonized retirement age for teachers have limited openings in some cadres. However, she urged candidates to perform well, as promotion would depend on merit and available vacancies.

The President of the Joint Unions Action Congress (JUAC) for the FCTA and FCDA, Rifkatu Iortyer, welcomed the participation of teachers who missed the August 2025 examination. Iortyer noted that the large turnout, despite the ongoing industrial action involving the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT chapter, demonstrates the candidates' commitment to their professional development.

Adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure the peaceful conduct of the examination. The Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwary, explained that security personnel have established accreditation checkpoints to manage the large number of candidates. He attributed the orderly conduct of the exercise to careful planning and cooperation from the candidates.

The examination is expected to conclude with the education officers returning to their respective schools after completing the assessment. The FCT Civil Service Commission remains committed to ensuring a transparent and merit-based promotion process. KEY_POINT: 5,990 education officers participate in 2026 promotion examination.
