Nigeria's Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that the circumstances that led to Peter Obi's impressive showing in the 2023 presidential election have changed. Wike identified the controversy surrounding the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress as one of the issues that contributed to Obi's support during the 2023 election. He made these remarks on Monday while appearing on TVC's Journalists' Hangout.
Wike, the former Rivers State governor, noted that the political landscape has shifted, and the Muslim-Muslim ticket is no longer a contentious issue. According to him, the All Progressives Congress, led by Bola Tinubu, has successfully mitigated the controversy. In the 2023 presidential election, Obi, who ran on the platform of the Labour Party, finished third behind Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Wike, who was one of five PDP governors that formed the G5 before the 2023 election, revealed that the group had adopted a strategy that impacted Atiku's support in the South-South region. The governors regarded Atiku as a significant threat due to the PDP's strong presence in the region and decided to allow Obi to garner votes there instead. This strategic decision was aimed at weakening Atiku's chances.
The G5, comprising Wike, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, had refused to support Atiku's 2023 presidential campaign following a dispute with the PDP leadership over the party's presidential ticket and leadership structure. Wike's group believed that allowing Obi to win in the South-South would not harm their interests.
Wike disclosed that he opposed Obi's victory in Rivers, where he was governor at the time, because he believed it would send a wrong political signal. He stated that the G5 stopped Obi from winning in Rivers to prevent misinterpretation of the outcome. Wike, who was appointed FCT minister by President Tinubu in 2023, has since been supporting the president's bid for another term.
Wike dismissed the prospect of Obi receiving the same level of support in 2027. According to him, the factors that contributed to Obi's success in 2023 no longer exist, and Obi would not be able to replicate his previous performance. Wike expressed confidence in Tinubu's ability to secure another term, advising Obi to consider a future bid in 2031.
