Former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, for failing to bring tangible development or political empowerment to Evo Kingdom despite holding top political offices for 24 years. Wike made these remarks during an interactive session with leaders and stakeholders of Evo Kingdom in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area. He questioned Amaechi's legacy, emphasizing the need for leaders to prioritize human capacity development and uplift their people.
Wike's comments were directed at Amaechi's 24-year tenure across various arms of government, including eight years as Speaker of the House of Assembly, eight years as Governor, and eight years as Minister. Wike challenged the kingdom to present evidence of what was attracted to the land under Amaechi's reign, stating that nothing tangible could be pointed to. In contrast, Wike highlighted his own achievements, citing projects he brought to Rivers State and his people during his tenure as Minister of State for Education.
Wike emphasized that his political philosophy centers on human capacity development, divine gratitude, and uplifting his people. He stressed that unlike past leaders who used their elevation to pull down others and monopolize power, his approach prioritizes empowering others. Wike warned against selfish politics that crumbles once the leader passes on, emphasizing the need for sustainable leadership and infrastructure.
The FCT Minister reiterated his firm trust in God rather than human promises, stating that God is the only person who will not disappoint. He advised against relying on human beings for support, emphasizing the importance of doing one's best while being prepared for potential disappointment. Wike also recounted how his administration restructured the chieftaincy institution to give Evo Kingdom adequate representation in the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.
Wike dismissed claims that traditional politics or native charms could intimidate him, boldly stating that he is not afraid of 'juju' or political threats. He expressed contentment with his achievements under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stressing that he has no further personal political ambitions other than serving as a vessel for his people. Wike highlighted that he has been a minister twice and cannot hold other public offices again.
Addressing political uncertainties and betrayal, Wike emphasized the importance of leaving behind a leadership legacy that can continue after one's departure. He stated that the problem in their area is that leaders often prioritize their own interests, causing everything to crumble when they pass on. Wike's approach, in contrast, prioritizes building a sustainable leadership structure.
Wike concluded by expressing his gratitude to God for the opportunities he has had, stating that he asks only for long life to continue serving his people. He urged his people to prioritize serving God and doing their best in their endeavors, rather than relying on human promises.
