The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has launched a sensitization campaign in West Pokot, Kenya, to educate residents on legitimate overseas job opportunities and how to access them safely. This initiative, part of the Kazi Majuu program, aims to provide accurate information to residents interested in seeking employment abroad. Many young people in the region are eager to work outside the country but lack knowledge on available opportunities and procedures.

The campaign began with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) and local leaders, who will disseminate the information to residents at the grassroots level. Jennifer Wanami, leading the delegation from the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, emphasized the need for accurate information on overseas employment. She noted that many Kenyans are interested in seeking employment abroad but are often misinformed or lack knowledge on legitimate procedures.

The Kazi Majuu initiative aims to equip Kenyans with information on legitimate overseas employment opportunities and procedures to reduce cases of illegal migration and exploitation. Wanami stressed that remittances from Kenyans working abroad have become a crucial source of foreign exchange, contributing significantly to the country's economy. By providing residents with accurate information, the government hopes to empower them to make informed decisions.

West Pokot County Commissioner David Saruni welcomed the sensitization campaign, noting that it was timely and would help NGAOs respond to residents' queries about overseas employment opportunities. The campaign will also provide residents with information on safeguards against fraudulent agents and recruitment procedures. Saruni emphasized the critical role NGAOs play in informing the public on emerging issues.

The State Department delegation is scheduled to hold additional public forums in various locations, including Sigor, Kitelakapel Technical and Vocational Training Institute, and Kapenguria Kenya Medical Training College. These forums aim to reach a wider audience and provide more residents with essential information on legitimate overseas job opportunities.

Some participants expressed concerns about reports of Kenyans experiencing difficulties while working abroad, which have made some prospective migrants hesitant. The sensitization campaign seeks to address these concerns by providing accurate information and reassuring residents about the potential benefits of legitimate overseas employment. By doing so, the government hopes to protect residents from exploitation.

The campaign is expected to empower West Pokot residents, particularly young people, to make informed decisions about overseas employment opportunities. With the knowledge acquired, residents can avoid fraudulent agents and unscrupulous recruitment practices. The government's efforts aim to promote safe and legitimate migration, ultimately contributing to the country's economic growth.
