The Water Ladies Association, a group of female staff of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has taken a significant step to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene at Bamang Junior High School in the Ejisu municipality of the Ashanti Region. The association has inaugurated a modern urinal facility, which was funded through the voluntary contributions and resources of its members. This initiative aims to provide a comfortable and safe place for students, particularly girls, to ease themselves.
The intervention includes the renovation of the school's existing toilets and the construction of a dedicated borehole to provide uninterrupted water supply to the facility. According to Lady Hannan A.A Mumin, the National President of the Association, the project was designed to help girls, especially during menstruation, have a comfortable place to ease themselves. The facility is expected to greatly improve the overall sanitation and hygiene situation at the school.
The water project is approximately 80 percent complete, with key components, including the storage polytank and water pumps, already on-site and ready for installation. Although equipment availability caused a brief delay in drilling, work is set to resume immediately upon the arrival of the necessary machinery. The association targets full completion of the project by the end of next month. Lady Hannan A.A Mumin urged the management of the school and the pupils to keep the facility clean to prolong its lifespan.
Mr Isaac Kwabena Asante, Headmaster of the School, expressed his gratitude to the Water Ladies Association for the project. He revealed that the situation at the school used to be terrible, with pupils, especially girls, finding it difficult to respond to nature's call. The girls had to go deep into the bush to avoid being seen by their colleagues, and those who soiled themselves had to walk all the way back home or borrow sweaters from friends to cover themselves.
The Headmaster promised to maintain the facility to ensure it lasts for the next 40 years and beyond. He noted that this is the first time the school is having a urinal facility built since its establishment in 1958. The facility is expected to provide a well-furnished place for students to ease themselves and help the girls keep themselves tidy.
The Queen Mother of Bamang, Nana Werekua Boateng, described the project as an awesome intervention for the town. She appealed to people within and outside the town to support similar projects. She thanked the Water Ladies Association and urged residents to keep the facility clean at all times. The community is expected to greatly benefit from this initiative, which aims to improve the overall well-being of the students.
The inauguration of the urinal facility is a significant step towards improving sanitation and hygiene at Bamang Junior High School. The Water Ladies Association's initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the students, particularly the girls, who will now have a safe and comfortable place to ease themselves. The association's efforts have been commended by the school administration and the community, who are looking forward to the project's completion.
