The impending departure of Governor Anne Waiguru has turned Kirinyaga into a political battleground, with potential candidates positioning themselves for a contest that could become one of the most closely fought governor races in the next general election. Waiguru is serving her second and final term, making the succession battle inevitable. The contest is shaping up as more than a straightforward search for her replacement, with several factors at play.
At the centre of the emerging contest is an increasingly crowded field led by Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango, former Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici, Kirinyaga Central MP Gitari Gachoki, and former Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri. Each enters the race with a distinct political asset. Murango has built his profile through legislative activism and his association with the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Waiguru has been unequivocal that her preferred successor should emerge from the ruling UDA party. She has since endorsed Gachoki, who is expected to seek the governorship on a UDA ticket. However, the endorsement could also expose Gachoki to the central dilemma of the race: whether association with Waiguru and UDA will be an asset or a liability. Some residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling party, which could make it difficult for a UDA candidate to retain the seat.
Murango, who has been a member of DCP since its formation, has built a significant political base and is believed to enjoy the backing of party leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The relationship was put on display last week when DCP held a rally in the county. Gachagua denied Ngirici, a recent entrant into the party, an opportunity to address residents at Kiang’ombe, triggering chants from her supporters.
Ngirici has a different political story, having served as Woman Representative from 2017 before challenging Waiguru for the governorship in 2022. She secured 105,677 votes against Waiguru’s 113,088, a difference of only 7,411 votes. That margin remains one of her strongest political arguments, suggesting she already has a sizeable voter base and does not need to build her campaign from scratch.
The geographical calculation adds another layer to the race, with two prominent aspirants coming from the same area. This could make the contest less about the number of candidates and more about how effectively each can consolidate support across the county. Ndambiri brings yet another dimension, having served as Waiguru’s deputy during her first term before the two fell out midway through the term.
The succession battle brings together four distinct political propositions: Waiguru-backed continuity through UDA; Murango’s DCP and Gachagua connection; Ngirici’s proven grassroots support and narrow 2022 defeat; and Ndambiri’s experience and alternative party platform. The contest is expected to be a test of whether Waiguru’s political influence can survive beyond her tenure and whether voters will reward continuity or seek an alternative.
