The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the appointment of Suleiman Kum as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office (HNO). Kum, 56, previously served as Deputy Registrar in the HNO's office and Senior Deputy Registrar, Test Administration, at WAEC. He joined the council on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II and has since held various key positions. Kum's appointment was confirmed on Sunday, October 5, 2026.
Kum succeeds Dr Amos Dangut, whose three-year tenure as HNO expired on October 1, 2026. Dangut has assumed office as Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of WAEC. According to WAEC, Kum is a seasoned test developer, administrator, and executive with extensive knowledge of test development, test administration, examination security, and branch and zonal office management. His experience spans over 28 years, with a proven track record of driving administrative and technological innovations.
Kum has been credited with pioneering several initiatives, including Variable Data Printing and enhanced code-security features in security printing. He replaced council-wide attendance systems with facial-recognition biometric devices and led the seamless delivery of Achievement Tests using the Computer-Based Examination mode. These innovations have significantly enhanced the efficiency and security of WAEC's operations.
Before his appointment as HNO, Kum served in various capacities, including Assistant Registrar II/Head, Exams Security, in Awka, Yola, and Makurdi. He was also Branch Controller in Gusau, Kano, and held positions in Port Harcourt, Ikeja, and Lagos. Kum's leadership skills have earned him numerous institutional commendations, accolades, and awards within the Council and beyond.
Kum, who hails from Plateau State, holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria. He is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning at NOUN. His educational background and experience make him well-suited for his new role as HNO.
