The Foundation for Peace and Solidarity (FPS) has initiated the second phase of the Vote Smart Cameroon project, titled “Beyond the Ballot.” This six-month endeavor, supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), aims to bolster electoral integrity, foster inclusive governance, and build democratic trust in anticipation of the 2027 municipal elections. The project commenced in October 2026 and will run until March 2027, covering the Centre, West, Northwest, and Southwest Regions of Cameroon.

Building on the successes of the first phase, which focused on engaging newly registered voters during the presidential election, the second phase seeks to encourage sustained civic participation and greater citizen involvement in governance and accountability. The initiative specifically targets young people, women, conflict-affected communities, electoral stakeholders, governance actors, media professionals, and civil society organizations, particularly those whose voices are often underrepresented in democratic processes.

The project encompasses five key activities designed to promote electoral integrity and civic engagement. These include the establishment of Civic Integrity Sandboxes, which facilitate dialogue between citizens and governance actors. Additionally, community verification networks and rumor clinics will be set up to counter misinformation. The introduction of citizen governance scorecards will enable the assessment of local government responsiveness and accountability.

A critical component of the project involves the training of 60 monitors from youth groups, women’s organizations, and civil society. These monitors will be equipped to identify electoral risks, barriers to participation, and gaps in public trust. Furthermore, the project will produce three evidence-based policy briefs, offering recommendations on governance reforms, citizen participation, accountability, and electoral integrity.

By the end of the project, the organizers expect to establish three platforms for citizen-institution dialogue. They also plan to train 30 media experts, civil society actors, and community leaders in information verification. The initiative aims to strengthen civic networks across the four regions, ensuring the sustained participation of young people, women, and conflict-affected communities in peaceful, inclusive, and accountable democratic processes beyond 2027.

The Vote Smart Cameroon project is a strategic effort to enhance democratic governance in Cameroon. By engaging various stakeholders and promoting civic participation, the project seeks to contribute to the country’s democratic development. The involvement of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) underscores the importance of international support in fostering democratic growth in Cameroon.

As Cameroon prepares for the 2027 municipal elections, the Vote Smart Cameroon project is poised to play a significant role in shaping the country’s electoral landscape. Through its comprehensive approach, the project aims to leave a lasting impact on Cameroon’s democratic processes, ensuring that they are more inclusive, transparent, and accountable.
