The Vodacom Coastal Classic, held on October 4, 2026, in Tanzania, has demonstrated that cycling is becoming more than a sporting contest in the country. The event, which attracted 147 cyclists from Tanzania and other countries, served as a precursor to the Nyerere Cycling Tour. The race covered a 109-kilometre route from Julius Nyerere International Airport to Bagamoyo, showcasing Tanzania's coastal landscape and historical character. The event promotes tourism, nurtures talent, creates economic opportunities for young people, and supports communities through education, health, and environmental initiatives.

The Vodacom Coastal Classic and the Nyerere Cycling Tour provide a model of how sport can be connected to tourism and corporate social responsibility while creating opportunities for athletes and communities. The route of the Coastal Classic was part of the attraction, exposing participants and followers to Tanzania's coastal landscape and the historical character of Bagamoyo. The event was commended by the National Sports Council (NSC) senior sports officer Charles Maguzu, who praised the organisers and partners for using sport to drive social and economic development.

The Guest of Honour, Bagamoyo District Commissioner Ramadhani Rashid Katanga, highlighted the broader importance of the race, saying cycling was helping promote healthy lifestyles, nurture young athletes, and showcase Tanzania's tourism attractions. The strongest immediate benefit of the Coastal Classic for cyclists was the opportunity to turn talent into income, with Uganda's Charles Kagimu winning the men's category and taking home Sh10 million. The prize structure demonstrates that cycling can provide direct financial rewards for athletes.

The participation of cyclists from different countries gives Tanzanian riders the opportunity to compete against athletes from outside the country, providing exposure and experience that can contribute to the growth of the sport. Cyclists finishing between fourth and tenth positions in both categories received Sh1 million each. The Nyerere Cycling Tour, which begins its 1,500-kilometre journey from Dar es Salaam to Butiama on October 5, combines sport with activities focused on education, health, and environmental conservation.

The Nyerere Cycling Tour founder Gabriel Landa says the wider purpose of the initiative has been part of the initiative from the beginning, which is about more than cycling. It is about connecting people with communities, celebrating the legacy of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, and using the journey to create a positive impact along the way. The involvement of corporate partners gives the initiative another important dimension, with Vodacom Tanzania as the main partner.

Vodacom Business Director Nguvu Kamando said the Coastal Classic and Nyerere Cycling Tour were helping promote domestic tourism, support education initiatives, and encourage positive social impact in communities along the route. The initiative incorporates education activities along the route, meaning communities do not simply watch cyclists pass through before the event moves on. The broader programme has included support for education through initiatives such as the provision of desks and classroom improvements.

The Vodacom Coastal Classic and the Nyerere Cycling Tour have demonstrated the potential of cycling as a tool for sports tourism and corporate social responsibility in Tanzania. The events have provided a platform for athletes to compete and earn income, while also promoting tourism and supporting communities through education and health initiatives. The success of the events is a testament to the growing role of cycling in promoting healthy lifestyles and creating opportunities for young athletes and communities.
