Absa Bank Ghana has inaugurated its new head office building, known as Absa Place, located at Ridge, in Accra. The five-storey building was opened in the presence of government officials, regulators, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, customers, partners, and other stakeholders. This significant milestone marks over 100 years of the bank's operations in Ghana. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the wider role of the financial sector in creating opportunities and contributing to the country's growth.
Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who inaugurated the new building, urged Absa Bank to deepen its support for businesses, expand access to finance, and contribute to the country's economic transformation. She emphasized that Ghana requires financial institutions willing to support businesses, invest in value addition, grow exports, and create sustainable employment. The government's focus is on consolidating macroeconomic stability, accelerating economic transformation, and creating jobs, which requires strong partnerships between the government and the private sector.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted Absa Bank's role in Ghana's financial sector, which extends beyond core banking operations. She cited the bank's partnership with the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat to convene a strategic dialogue that brought together business and industry leaders and policymakers to explore opportunities for Ghanaian enterprises. Additionally, she mentioned the bank's partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, which focuses on youth employment and enterprise, as well as its Ready to Work programme, which invests in employability initiatives for young people.
The Vice-President encouraged Absa Bank to continue improving the customer experience, deepen its support for the productive sectors, and expand access to finance for women-owned businesses and young entrepreneurs. She also suggested that the bank develop practical solutions for businesses in agriculture, manufacturing, and trade. By doing so, Absa Bank can contribute to the country's economic growth and transformation.
Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Matilda Asante Asiedu, noted that the inauguration of Absa Place should not be measured only by the architecture of the building but by how effectively it supports the bank's operations, customers, and contribution to the financial sector. She emphasized the importance of strong governance, operational resilience, sound decision-making, and trust from customers and the wider Ghanaian public.
Mrs Asante-Asiedu further highlighted that the financial services industry is evolving rapidly, with digital platforms, payment systems, changing customer expectations, and growing interconnectedness reshaping the way banking services are designed, delivered, and consumed. She noted that these developments create opportunities for wider access, greater efficiency, and more convenient services but also bring risks that must be promptly identified and effectively managed.
Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana, Dr Edward Nartey Botchway, said the Absa Place represents more than the opening of a new building, describing it as a promise to the country. He disclosed that last year, the bank provided GH¢3.9 billion in micro-loans as part of its support for the real economy. Dr Botchway reaffirmed the bank's commitment to Ghana, stating that the country is not just a place for them but their home.
