US Vice President JD Vance has stated that the war with Iran was the primary reason behind the Republican Party's loss in the 2026 midterm elections. He emphasized that a significant number of voters who supported President Donald Trump and himself in the 2024 elections switched their support to the Democrats in the recent midterms. Vance made these comments in a lengthy post on the "X" platform.

According to Vance, Republican data analysts had focused on the similarities between the current electoral demographics and those of the 2024 elections to assess their chances of winning. The indicators showed good turnout in some states and very high turnout in others, with no significant decline in any state. However, despite these positive signs, the Republicans still suffered a loss.

Vance revealed that he had asked one of the top data analysts about the possibility of a Republican surprise in the elections, and the analyst replied that the results might be better than polls suggested. However, the data indicated that many voters who had supported Trump and Vance in 2024 were angry and intended to vote for the opposing party. The midterm election results confirmed these predictions.

Vance noted that Republican voters had turned out in good numbers, citing Florida as an example where the Republican voter turnout exceeded that of the Democrats by nine points, just two points shy of the 2024 election results. However, the main issue was not the low voter turnout but rather the significant number of voters who had switched from supporting Trump and Vance in 2024 to voting for the Democrats in 2026.

Vance acknowledged that discussions within the Republican Party about the reasons for their loss would be contentious. One respected pollster attributed part of the problem to the party's unclear economic message during the final stages of the campaign. However, Vance stressed that the primary reason for the loss was clear, citing a poll by a prominent US pollster that predicted a 13-point loss for the Republicans.

The poll revealed that many Trump voters in 2024 were angry and intended to vote for the Democrats, with four main demands: ending the war, focusing on living costs and inflation, prioritizing American interests, and changing the nature of the relationship with Israel. Vance argued that these demands explained why some Republican voters had switched their support to the Democrats.

Vance concluded by reiterating that the war was the main reason for the Republican loss and expressed optimism about the United States' future. He encouraged those dissatisfied with the election results to channel their anger into supporting and electing Republican candidates who shared their vision.
