The Spring Lake Police Department in North Carolina has launched an appeal for help in tracing the family of Henry Mukolwe Macharia, a Kenyan national who died on September 11, 2026. Macharia, 28, died of natural causes in Spring Lake, a town in Cumberland County. Authorities have been unable to locate his next of kin despite efforts to do so.

The police department posted the appeal on Facebook on October 3, identifying Macharia as Henry Mukolwe Macharia, born on August 19, 1998. Anyone with information about Macharia's family is asked to contact Spring Lake Police at 910-436-0350 or the Cape Fear Valley Vital Statistics Office at 910-615-5584.

Kenyans on social media have responded to the appeal, suggesting that Macharia may be from the Kikuyu community. Some have recommended that the police department contact the Kenyan consulate in the US or Kenya Highlands University in Kericho, where Macharia may have studied. Eric Wambugu Wangui claimed to recognise Macharia as a former student at the university.

The suggestion to involve diplomatic channels has been echoed by some Kenyans online. Catherine Sumowalt suggested that the police department could contact the consulate where Macharia obtained his visa for assistance. Mwangi Loise noted the significance of Macharia's surname, which is common in the Kikuyu community.

Some Kenyans have pointed to the country's national identification system as a potential avenue for locating Macharia's family. Beatrice Karani suggested that the police department could check Macharia's fingerprints and Kenyan identity card to locate his family. Muthoni Mary added that Macharia's surname and community may be found in certain regions of Kenya, including Murang'a, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Nyandarua.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding Macharia's death beyond the confirmation that it resulted from natural causes. The police department is urging members of the public with any information about Macharia's family or next of kin to come forward and assist in the matter.

This is not the first case of a Kenyan citizen dying abroad and their family seeking help to bring their remains home. Recently, the family of Lynette S. Mwendwa, a Kenyan nurse who died in Texas, appealed for financial support to repatriate her remains to Kenya for burial.
