The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia has imposed new security restrictions on its employees' travel in the country. As of October 11, 2026, US government employees are required to obtain special authorization to use King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, as well as airports in Jeddah and Dammam. This decision was made in response to recent attacks on Saudi airports.

The new restrictions were announced via a security alert on the US Embassy Riyadh's Twitter account. The alert advised US citizens to exercise extreme caution when using major airports in Saudi Arabia, citing potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions. US citizens were also advised to check their flight departure status directly with the airline and airport.

The US Embassy's announcement comes after a recent attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which was carried out by Houthi militants on October 10, 2026. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, including nationals from several countries, and injured over 300 others. The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority reported that among the victims were 4 Saudi citizens, 2 from Bangladesh, and 1 each from the US, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, and Sudan.

The US Embassy also reminded its employees that they are not allowed to travel within 20 miles of the Yemen border due to safety risks. Additionally, special authorization is required for travel to the provinces of Jizan, Asir, Najran, and the cities of Qatif, Yanbu, and Taif. These restrictions are in place to ensure the safety and security of US government employees in Saudi Arabia.

The recent attacks on Saudi airports have been attributed to Houthi militants, who have been involved in a longstanding conflict with the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. The US has expressed support for Saudi Arabia in its efforts to counter Houthi aggression. US President Donald Trump has stated that Washington is considering joining Saudi-led strikes against the Houthis.

The US Embassy's security alert also advised US citizens to be aware of potential travel disruptions and to take necessary precautions when traveling in Saudi Arabia. The embassy emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of US citizens and government employees in the country.

In response to the recent attacks, the US Embassy has taken steps to enhance security measures for its employees in Saudi Arabia. The embassy has urged US citizens to remain vigilant and to follow all instructions from local authorities. The situation in Saudi Arabia remains fluid, and the US Embassy will continue to monitor developments and provide updates to its citizens.
