US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has announced the creation of a new four-star command, dubbed the Autonomous Warfare Command (AutoWarCom), which will oversee the acquisition and deployment of drones and robotic systems. The command is set to be operational by October 2027 and will be led by a four-star general. The announcement was made at a ceremony at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia.

The new command is part of a significant shift in the US military's approach to autonomous warfare. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon has allocated $74 billion in its proposed budget for autonomous technologies, including drones and counter-drone systems. The goal is to triple spending on autonomous warfare. The command's first leader, Owen West, a former Marine Corps officer, and Max Strassser, a test pilot from the Navy's SEAL Team, will oversee the command's establishment.

The Autonomous Warfare Command will focus on building a domestic production line for low-cost, unmanned systems. West emphasized the need for the US to keep pace with the rapid adaptation seen in modern battlefields, such as in Ukraine. The command will also oversee the development of artificial intelligence and its integration into military operations. According to West, the US will be at the forefront of AI development and will leverage this technology to gain a strategic advantage.

To accelerate the development of autonomous systems, the Pentagon has launched a new initiative called "Project Agenincourt". The project, named after the 15th-century Battle of Agincourt, aims to harness the power of technology to gain a strategic advantage on the battlefield. The project will involve industry competitions, known as "sprints", where companies will be challenged to develop and test their autonomous systems in realistic combat scenarios.

The competitions, which have already been tested in Colorado, involve sending drones to complete tasks such as targeting vehicles and navigating through tunnels and buildings. The goal is to develop systems that can be produced quickly and at a low cost, with the winning companies receiving purchase orders within weeks. The Pentagon has already sent thousands of robotic systems to military units, including those deployed in the Middle East.

In addition to the Autonomous Warfare Command, Defense Secretary Austin has also launched a new initiative, "Project Meridian", to explore the future of warfare. The project, which involves industry leaders such as Elon Musk and Newt Gingrich, aims to identify new ideas for how the US military will fight future wars. The project is expected to provide recommendations within 120 days.

The US military is also taking steps to protect its bases from cyber attacks and drone threats. A new office, "America's Shield", has been established to oversee the protection of military bases and ensure that they remain operational even in the event of a cyber attack or power outage. According to Austin, the US military will remain prepared and resilient in the face of emerging threats.
